What is Youth Mental Health First Aid?

Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) is a training program that teaches adults how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among youth. The training follows curriculum established by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing.

Youth Mental Health First Aiders are adults who work or interact with youth aged 12 to 18. YMHFA training is valid for three years. These first aiders typically include:

  • Teachers

  • School staff and administrators

  • Social workers

  • Parents

  • Managers

  • Human resource officers

  • Welfare officers

  • Correction officers

  • TAFE and university lecturers

  • Police officers

  • Youth workers

  • Healthcare workers

  • Nurses

  • Lawyers

  • Camp counselors

  • Youth group leaders

Upcoming YMHFA Trainings:

Trainings are typically completed Completely In-Person, Blended In-Person, or Blended Virtual. For the Blended courses, learners must complete 2 hours of self-paced online pre-work prior to attending the live Instructor-Led Training (ILT).
